You had to mention bicycle riders. Now you've gotten me started. How many times do I see a bicycle rider IGNORE the rules of the road? 95% of the bicycle riders I see on a day to day basis, ignore the rules of the road, and that includes running through a red stop light without even slowing down, weaving between cars that are stopped at a stoplight, and changing from the roadway bike lane to the sidewalk whenever it is convenient for them and regardless of pedestrian traffic. I could go on but you get my drift. If someone wants to ride a bicycle then obey the rules of the road. And when are local governments going to start licensing bicyclists? You have a license to ride a bicycle and you disobey the law, now you can be given a ticket and enjoy your time in court!

I remember stopping at a crossing one day (gates down, lights flashing) when a couple of customers suggested I run the crossing. Two seconds later a train ran through the intersection at high speed.
Needless to say, my customers were stunned.
I turned to them and said "And that's why I don't cross gated crossings." They had nothing to say to that.

FANTASTIC article. It is refreshing to see local law enforcement being proactive instead of reactive. This needs to happen more often. Have A RailSafe Day…

Rail crossings have flashing red lights which are the same as a stop sign.
How does BNSF feel about "Quiet Zones"? Suburbs all around Chicago are enacting quiet zones that prevent trains from sounding their horns at crossings except in case of an emergency. Judging by what these people saw at crossings, it seems that the engineer should be allowed to use all the tools at his disposal to ensure safe travel.

try and beat the train game. if you lose, you are out of the gene pool and 1/2 to 3/4 miles down the track. helps get rid of the stupid drivers.

"Flashing yellow lights at a railroad crossing are equivalent to a stop sign, meaning a driver must come to a full stop and look both ways before proceeding. But during this exercise, police said car drivers treated them as if they were 'yield' signs, slowing down briefly and then speeding up when they felt the train was far enough away."
I thought train track crossing warning lights were all red, not yellow...

Everyone is in a rush. There should be no grade crossings - they should all be under- or overpasses. More expensive to build but, in the long run lower "cost" in terms of lives & property.

Mount rocket launchers on the locomotive and blast those who ignore crossing signals far enough ahead that train engineers don't have to see their faces as they die, as they do now.
