Gasoline will dominate for a long while, panelists say

The Houston Chronicle -- With no technology offering the perfect solution, automakers are pursuing a multipronged strategy to reduce greenhouse gases by improving fuel efficiency and developing cars that run longer and better from an array of energy options.

But most motorists still can expect regular trips to the gas pump for quite a while, industry representatives said Wednesday at the IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates CERAWeek energy conference.

“The future has to be a very diverse portfolio of answers,” said Britta Gross, who works on energy systems and infrastructure with General Motors Co., part of a panel that discussed the future of transportation.

In fact, the description of the Chevy Volt indicate drivers won't need gas if they travel up to 40 miles per day. That's within the range of most drivers intracity. Gasoline will be needed only for intracity trips. The plug-in Prius will also greatly reduce the need for gas and ethanol. It may take "decades" to replace gasoline as they say, but we can halve our consumption of 12.5 million gallons of gasoline per month within this decade. Technology is moving fast these days.

We have been so dependent on it for so long, there is no way to just stop cold turkey!! We can slowly ween ourselves off of it though. (Kind of like an oil addiction!)

Gasoline is still the best way to transfer a large amount of energy from one location (the pump) to another (the vehicle) and is readily available. Electricity, which is readily available as well, takes a while to transfer to a vehicle.

The alternate technologies out that are out there and will work, like natural gas or electric don't do this. So oil companies will be fighting them all the way.

When you stop to think about it , our national security really depends on it. I believe in American know-how, also.

While other fuels and energy sources will supplant gasoline and diesel, those crude oil derivatives will be dominant for a while. Electricity, biofuels, maybe natural gas will make inroads, but crude is still king. So, as we pursue those alternative fuels we should still Drill baby drill! GTH

We've got a huge base of vehicles that overwhelmingly uses only gasoline or diesel. If something perfect came along, it'd still be a long time before all those were off the road. Besides that, the fact is that we don't have a good replacement yet anyway.
